Pedestrian struck, killed by commuter train

A pedestrian was reported killed at a railroad crossing in Ipswich this morning when struck by an MBTA commuter train.

As a result of the accident commuter rail service between Newburyport and Hamilton-Wenham station has been disrupted.

WBZ Radio News is reporting the victim was a 20-year-old man whose name has not yet been released by authorities.

The accident took place about 9:30 at so-called Ice House crossing.

The MBTA has sent buses to transport passengers between Newburyport, Rowley, Ipswich and Hamilton-Wenham until service is restored.

The Newburyport rail commuter line to Boston merges in Beverly with the Rockport commuter line.

Yesterday on the Rockport line a 37-year-old railroad worker from Chelmsford was fatally injured when struck at the West Gloucester railroad station by a piece of machinery being used by rail crews working to replace ties along the rail line from Beverly to Rockport.
