Train kills man in Jamaica Plain

A man was killed yesterday morning when he was struck by an Orange Line train while walking along the tracks south of the Green Street station in Jamaica Plain, said Joseph Pesaturo, an MBTA spokesman.

The investigation is ongoing, and MBTA Transit Police are trying to identify the man, who was not carrying identification, said Pesaturo.

The man apparently walked off the station platform and was struck by a northbound train about 200 feet away at about 6 a.m., Pesaturo said. It was not immediately known why the man was walking along the tracks, which are powered by a high-voltage third rail, he said. Pesaturo said the man's injuries were consistent with being struck by the train and coming into contact with the third rail.

Orange Line service was shut down for 2 hours and 20 minutes, and buses were used to shuttle passengers, he said. Regular service resumed around 8:20 a.m. The operator, as required under Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and federal transportation rules, is undergoing drug and alcohol testing, Pesaturo said.
