Section of I-93 car pool lane is reopened
A short section of the car pool lane on Interstate 93 north reopened yesterday morning for the first time since the fatal ceiling collapse in a Big Dig tunnel in July. The HOV lane, which is for buses and vehicles with two or more passengers, begins just north of Exit 20 and provides access to South Station and Kneeland Street. The short section of roadway had been closed to manage traffic flow as repairs were made in the Interstate 90 connector. On July 10, a massive ceiling panel fell, crushing a car and killing Milena Del Valle of Jamaica Plain. The remainder of the HOV lane, which provides access to Interstate 90 east and Logan International Airport, will remain closed to traffic until repairs are completed this spring.Stomach virus hits Emmanuel campus
An outbreak of gastrointestinal illness has sickened 39 Emmanuel College students since Wednesday, college and Boston health officials said yesterday. Disease investigators suspect the students are suffering from norovirus, a germ responsible for thousands of cases of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea in Massachusetts. Some of the Emmanuel students were sent to emergency rooms for treatment, but none required hospitalization and all are expected to recover fully over the next few days, officials said. In the wake of the outbreak, the college has started cleaning bathrooms more frequently and put posters in 120 bathrooms urging students to wash their hands, one of the best ways to prevent the spread of the illness.ROCHESTER, N.Y.
