Police arrest four men on drug charges

BOSTON
Boston police disclosed yesterday that drug units made several arrests Thursday and seized significant amounts of drugs. Officers arrested four people after executing several search warrants in Mattapan, Roxbury, and Dorchester. Alexander Maldonado-Coriano, 29, and Narciso Agron, 34, both of Roxbury, were arrested at a Homestead Street address in Roxbury where police said they ecovered significant amounts of cocaine. Police also arrested Keon Leary, 27, of Mattapan, and Carlos Alberto Rivera, 33, of Dorchester. Marijuana, ecstasy, and cocaine were seized from the Mattapan residence, and heroin and cocaine were taken from Rivera's residence.

BELMONT

Weapons and drugs are seized in home
Police officers executing a search warrant in Belmont yesterday netted a cache of weapons, drugs, and cash. At 11 a.m., detectives with the Suburban Middlesex County Drug Task Force executed a search warrant on Jeannette Avenue. Inside they recovered two handguns, a sawed-off shotgun, a high powered rifle, a stun gun, a bulletproof vest, marijuana, cocaine, equipment for cultivating marijuana, and $13,000 in cash. Police arrested Zachary St. Paul, 25, of Belmont. He was to be arraigned on several charges, including drug and firearm trafficking, on Monday in Cambridge District Court.

TAUNTON

Woman killed in early-morning crash
A 25-year-old woman was killed yesterday in a two-vehicle crash, police said. Jennifer M. Walker was a passenger in a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass that collided with a 2006 Ford pickup truck at 1:11 a.m. on Dean Street, according to a Taunton police press release. The driver of the Oldsmobile -- Richard Gould, 31, of Taunton -- was flown to Boston Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition, police said. Edward Leonard, 34, of Taunton, was driving the pickup. Police did not report that Leonard suffered any injuries. The crash remains under investigation, police said.

BROCKTON

Police seek information on burned body
The partially burned body of an adult male was found in Brockton yesterday behind a former bowling alley off Crescent Street. According to Assistant District Attorney Bridget Norton Middleton, the cause of death has not been determined, nor has the man been identified. The body has been brought to the chief medical examiner in Boston to determine the cause and manner of death, Middleton said. State Police assigned to the Plymouth district attorney's office and Brockton police are investigating.

BANGOR

National Guard soldiers return home
A contingent of 170 Maine Army National Guard troops returned home to an enthusiastic welcome yesterday after serving 12 months in Iraq. Friends and family members waited for hours to greet the returning Guard personnel. Television stations around the state captured the arrival shortly after 6 p.m. The Security Force I unit was stationed in Baghdad and Tallil, Iraq during its deployment and sustained two fatalities. Last May, a bomb attack killed Staff Sergeants Dale Kelly Jr., 48, of Richmond and David Veverka, 25, a University of Maine student from Jamestown, Pa. (AP)

Man guilty in Haverhill home invasion
A Worcester man was convicted in Lawrence Superior Court yesterday and sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison for his involvement in the armed invasion of a Haverhill home in 2004 . Yubar Perez, 22, held a father and his 13-year-old son at gunpoint while an accomplice stole a briefcase containing a large amount of money from the father's bedroom. One of the two other men involved in the invasion, Anthony Cruz, 20, of Webster, is to appear Monday in Lawrence Superior Court.

Study urges economic focus on arts
Capitalizing on more than just popular attractions like Tanglewood and the Norman Rockwell Museum would bolster Berkshire County's economy, business and community leaders say. A two-year, $1 million study released yesterday by the Berkshire Economic Development Corporation pushes for more development, support, and marketing of the area's creative and artistic resources. The so-called Berkshire Blueprint shows that about 6,000 people, or 10 percent of the workforce in Berkshire County, are involved in arts-related business. (AP)
