LOWELL, Mass. --A 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg on a Lowell street on Tuesday, apparently caught in the crossfire of a gang dispute, police said.

Police arrested two people, including a juvenile, and charged them with armed assault with intent to murder.

They are scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Lowell District Court, police said.

The shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon in Lowell's Highlands neighborhood at Smith and Westford streets. Officers patrolling nearby chased a group that fled into a nearby house on Grove Street.

The victim was taken to Lowell General Hospital and then was flown to a Boston hospital. Her name was not made public.
