X-ray photos have revealed unknown details about the artifacts recovered from the wreck of the Whydah, considered the world's only verified pirate shipwreck.

At left, a restored pistol from the Whydah, and the X-ray of a pistol encased in a "concretion," a composite formed by a chemical reaction between iron and saltwater. The circular objects in the X-ray near the trigger-guard are musket balls, Clifford said.
