Teenager shot on street in Brockton

7-year-old also hurt in attack

BROCKTON -- An 18-year-old male was seriously wounded, and a 7-year-old boy was injured last night in a shooting in Brockton, the Plymouth district attorney's office said.

Limited details were provided, but Brockton police said they were called at 6:07 p.m. for shots fired on Winthrop Street and found both victims outside.

They were taken to an area hospital, said Bridget Norton Middleton, spokeswoman for the Plymouth district attorney.

She said the 18-year-old was shot, but she did not specify how the child was hurt.

The names of the victims were not released.

Mario Fernandez, who identified himself as a friend of the 18-year-old victim, said he heard the shots from his porch at 150 Winthrop St.

Shortly afterward, his wounded friend ran up to him, and Fernandez said he braced him against a wall.

Outside the building last night, blood could be seen leading to the entrance.

Fernandez said a male approached the teenager on the street and asked to speak with him before shooting him at least four times at close range.

Fernandez did not have any information on the 7-year-old victim.

The shooting occurred four days after the slaying of Jose Gurley, 17, a student-athlete who was shot twice in the wrist and back while attending a party at his mother's house in Brockton, less than 2 miles from last night's shooting.

No one has been arrested in either shooting, both of which are under investigation by Brockton police and State Police assigned to the Plymouth district attorney's office, Middleton said.

Investigators are urging anyone with information to contact them at 508-941-0234.
