Possible abduction attempt of RFK granddaughter probed

A 10-year-old granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy may have been the victim of an abduction attempt in Hyannisport yesterday, Barnstable police said.

The girl, whom police would not identify because she is a minor, was walking away from a private tennis club about a half-mile from the Kennedy family compound at about 11:30 a.m. when two men in a white van asked if she needed a ride, Sergeant Ben Baxter said. The girl ran away.

"I don't know if that amounts to an abduction," Baxter said. "They didn't try to physically take her."

Police have stepped up patrols in the area of the incident, Baxter said.
