Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis shaved off his famed goatee at the Cask 'n Flagon yesterday, collecting $5,000 from Gillette for his Hits for Kids charity. But the close shave was no quick shave. With the lights from more than a dozen TV cameras shined on and a throng of media and fans cheered, the Golden Glove-winning good guy first had his facial hair trimmed. For a few moments yesterday afternoon, the slugger was sporting only a moustache before he showed off his clean-shaven face.
Stylists from the Newbury Street's Salon Marc Harris also helped out, doling out free shaves to anyone who donated to the foundation.
Youk isn't the first Sox star to shave his facial hair for a good
cause. After showing up for spring training in 2004 with a full beard, then
Sox outfielder Johnny Damon agreed to a deal with Gillette that he would
clean up with the company's M3Power shaving system. Before a crowd of
several hundred Damon got a shave from barber Letizia Grieci in the
Boylston Plaza outside the Prudential Center. And in return, the South
Boston-based razor company made a donation to Mayor Tom Menino's favorite
charity, ReadBoston.![]()
