Small fire breaks out at Fenway Park
Smoldering embers from the Red Sox's October blaze to glory? Even in the off-season, it seems, the Red Sox are red-hot.
A small fire broke out around 9 a.m. today at Fenway Park when sparks from a welder's torch ignited a pile of construction debris on the roof of the grandstand level above the third base line. Firefighters quickly extinguished the small fire, and reported no damage or injuries.
"There was no dollar loss," said Steve MacDonald, a spokesman for the Boston Fire Department. "Everything that was damaged was going to be thrown away anyway."
Construction workers were dismantling a temporary private suite and replacing them with seats as part of the team's off-season renovations of the storied park, MacDonald said. Workers were using the torches to cut through metal.
"When they're cutting metal, those torches create a lot of sparks," he said.
A firefighter working a paid detail because of the welding saw the pile of rubble begin to burn and notified authorities. Firefighters arrived within minutes but experienced difficulty in snaking hoses to the fire because of construction.
