Police searched last night for a man who they said shot a 22-year-old Mattapan woman who is pregnant with twins.

The woman - and the unborn children - remained in stable condition last night at Boston Medical Center, police said. Police did not disclose the victim's identity. Boston police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said she appeared to have been shot in the back through the window of her apartment.

Driscoll said she did not know how many bullets were fired, or how many times the woman was struck. Several television stations reported that she had been hit at least four times.

When asked about a possible motive for the shooting, Driscoll declined to speculate. "That's all still unfolding," she said. "This is a very active investigation."

Police received a call reporting a shooting at 85 Tennis Road at 9:15 p.m.

Ty Lewis, who lives in an apartment nearby, said the woman and her young son moved into the complex early last month. She would walk the boy to the bus stop every morning, he said.

"She just had her baby shower two weeks ago," he said. "She's a nice girl. Hopefully she's OK."

Globe correspondent Daniel Peleschuk contributed to this report. Megan Woolhouse can be reached at mwoolhouse@globe.com.
