Coast Guard rejects Weaver's Cove Energy appeal over LNG terminal

BOSTON —The U.S. Coast Guard has rejected an appeal of its decision to advise against a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal in Fall River.

The Coast Guard wrote a letter Monday to Weaver's Cove Energy LLC executives to reaffirm its position that the river approaching the project is unsafe for navigation by massive LNG tankers.

The latest decision follows a review of Weaver's Cove appeal, which said the Coast Guard didn't fairly evaluate all supporting information when it ruled that part of the transit route is a navigational hazard.

A major problem is the relatively short distance between two bridges on the Taunton River. The Coast Guard found the safety risks of the tankers navigating the 1,100-foot gap were too great.

Weaver's Cove spokesman Jim Grasso says the project is far from dead and the company will appeal again.
