FRAMINGHAM, Mass.—A teenager who was driving a car that struck and killed a 12-year-old Wayland boy has been cleared of motor vehicle homicide.

A six-member Framingham District Court jury returned the not guilty verdict Monday after the trial of 18-year-old Sari Lelchook of Acton.

Lelchook was charged in the November 2006 death of John Martin, a middle school student who was crossing Old Connecticut Path.

The prosecution and defense differed on whether the accident was avoidable, with prosecutors contending that Lelchook was not paying enough attention to the road.

But defense attorney Kevin Mahoney said his client was traveling within the posted speed limit and that the boy was wearing dark clothing at night.

Some members of Martin's family wept after hearing the verdict, with the boy's older sister, Tina Martin, saying: "Justice was not served."
