BARNSTABLE, Mass.—A Cape Cod teenager has pleaded not guilty to placing a homemade bomb in the parking lot of a Barnstable supermarket.

Andrew Spalt, of Barnstable, was ordered held on $2,500 cash bail during his arraignment Wednesday in Barnstable District Court. He's charged with possession of an explosive.

The 18-year-old was ordered to stay away from the shopping plaza where he allegedly placed two soda bottles filled with a mixture of common household cleaning products outside of a Shaw's supermarket.

One bottle exploded Tuesday night, while a second bottle was found in the parking lot and disabled by state police. No one was injured.

Hyannis Fire Department Lieutenant Thomas Kenney says the devices were made using instructions found on the Web site YouTube.com. Authorities says the materials used to build the explosives were purchased in Shaw's.
