AMHERST, Mass.—Eight athletes have been suspended from the University of Massachusetts lacrosse team for what the school describes as a violation of team rules.

A school spokesman would not comment on whether the suspensions were connected to a fight on Friday night in Amherst in which lacrosse sticks were used as weapons.

University of Massachusetts director of news and information Ed Blaguszewski says the school is waiting to review the details surrounding the fight from Amherst police.

According to the Republican of Springfield, police have refused to say whether members of the UMass lacrosse team are being investigated.

The altercation at a North Pleasant Street apartment reportedly broke out shortly after several people were asked to leave. Authorities say several men returned to the party with lacrosse sticks and began fighting with others.
