Wayland faces lawsuit by Sudbury

Sudbury officials have filed a lawsuit to block neighboring Wayland's long-debated $140 million Town Center project.

The lawsuit, filed in Middlesex Superior Court last Thursday, attempts to overturn the Jan. 18 approval of a master special permit for the development by Wayland's Planning Board. The suit against the Planning Board and the developer says that both have failed to adequately address traffic concerns raised by the development.

The project, which took three years of planning and deliberations, would bring new businesses, condos, apartments, and a town green to a revitalized downtown in Wayland.

Twenty Wayland LLC has proposed the project at the intersection of routes 20 and 27, using a property that housed operations for Raytheon and Polaroid at different times.

Sudbury officials would not discuss the suit. Calls to the Sudbury town counsel were not returned.

Frank Dougherty, project manager for Twenty Wayland, said the company wants to resolve the lawsuit and move on with the project.

"The project has been several years in the making and is in the best interests of the town," said Dougherty. "The Planning Board decision was made after extensive studies, hearings, public comment, and deliberations on a variety of issues, including traffic, and the imposition of many controls and safeguards."
