MALDEN, Mass.—Acting Education Commissioner Jeffrey Nellhaus says he'll recommend that the Board of Education approve four new charter schools at its next meeting.

Two of the schools could open this fall if approved. The International Charter School of Southeastern Massachusetts in Brockton would serve 1,300 students in grades K-12. The Silver Hill Horace Mann Charter School in Haverhill would serve 580 students in grades K-5.

Two more schools could open in 2009. The Dorchester Collegiate Academy Charter School plans 240 students in grades 4-12. The Hampden Charter School of Science would be for 350 students in grades 6-12 from the Springfield area.

Charter schools receive state money but remain independent of local school boards.

The state education board meets February 26.
