A Theater district nightclub was the scene of a double shooting and a melee early this morning that left a state trooper with a broken arm and sent clubgoers spilling out into the streets.
Police apprehended the gunman, identified as Damion Jamaal-Anthony Haley, 24, of Milton, shortly after he allegedly pointed a small black handgun into a crowd and fired off several shots, hitting two people in the arm. The shooting inside Aria Nightclub, at 264 Tremont St., was preceded by a fight that involved as many as 35 people, some of whom smashed glass champagne bottles over the heads of others.
A state trooper who helped apprehend the suspect suffered a broken arm and another unidentified person was treated for a cut on the head, after being hit by a bottle.
A manager of the club showed up this afternoon to allow several patrons entry to retrieve their coats and other belongings. The manager, who declined to give his name, said there was ample security and that everyone who entered the night before was patted down. The patrons who returned to gather their belongings agreed that security appeared tight.
Boston Police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said Haley faces gun charges and
that other charges against those who participated in the fight may come.![]()
