REVERE - A 23-year-old from Lynn fatally stabbed his mother after an argument in her home yesterday afternoon, prosecutors said, and was then shot by police officers responding to the scene.
The stabbing victim, Lisa Bryson Roche, 42, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Her son, Cory Roche, was in stable condition last night. He will be arraigned today on murder charges in Chelsea District Court, prosecutors said.
"We will investigate Mrs. Roche's tragic final moments until the facts are known," Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said at a press conference yesterday evening at Revere City Hall.
Conley said the officer who shot Cory Roche apparently acted in self-defense but the district attorney would not provide details, saying only that some actions by Roche prompted the officer to shoot. Roche was hit in the torso. Officials did not disclose how many shots were fired.
Police got a call for a domestic disturbance on Fernwood Avenue at 3:15. Conley said arriving officers found a "live" conflict.
Lisa Bryson Roche had been stabbed, and her son held a knife, Conley said. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon but "the order went unheeded," Conley said.
Conley said that Roche and his mother were not alone in her apartment, but he would not disclose who else was present.
The officer who fired the shots went to the hospital for observation, but has been released. Officials did not say where the Roches were taken for treatment. Police Chief Terence K. Reardon referred all questions to Conley.
News of the stabbing and shooting stunned residents of the neighborhood a few blocks from the police station and City Hall. Police sealed off the crime scene and were waiting to execute a search warrant last night.
Angelo Migliero, who lives two houses away, said he did not hear shots, but saw police cars quietly flood the street.
"Over 30 years [I've lived here], and nothing like this has happened," Migliero said. "It's these rental apartments, you don't know who's coming and going."
Doreen Jordan, who lives with her son in a nearby apartment, said she liked the street because it was usually quiet. Yesterday, she kept her son inside and tried to hide what happened from him.
"Oh my God, it's awful," she said. "I'm just amazed."
