Rare blue rainbow trout found at state fish hatchery

SANDWICH, Mass.—Workers at the state fish hatchery in Sandwich have discovered a rare blue rainbow trout.

The fish was swimming among the thousands of other brown, brook, tiger and rainbow trout at the facility. Officials say the trout appears to be about three years old.

Steve Hurley, regional manager for the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, tells the Cape Cod Times the blue color is caused by a genetic defect that results in a lack of pigmentation.

Just a handful of blue trout result from a spawn of one million eggs.

The hatchery raises fish to stock the state's rivers and ponds, but hatchery manager Craig Lodowsky says the blue trout isn't going anywhere.
