BOSTON—Simmons College trustees have announced that President Susan Scrimshaw will step down at the end of the academic year and be replaced by trustees chairwoman and hospital executive Helen Drinan.

Scrimshaw, the former dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago who took over at Simmons in 2006, will take a sabbatical and then return to the health care field.

Trustees announced Thursday that Drinan, vice president of Caritas Christi Health Care System, has agreed to serve as interim president of the women's college for two to three years.

Trustees vice chairman Steve Jonas says the school is "grateful" for Scrimshaw's leadership.

He says Drinan is a "respected leader" whose agreement to stay at least two years assures stability at the school with about 2,000 undergraduates.
