Company struggles to restore gas service to Boston consumers
BOSTON—National Grid says gas service should be restored to most of its customers in Boston's Financial District and the North End by Tuesday morning.
The utility has been working to repair a water main break Saturday that ruptured a gas main and flooded the underground gas system. By Monday morning, more than 35,000 gallons of water had been flushed out of the flooded system.
More than 400 customers on about 30 streets lost gas service. Service is expected to be restored in the North End by later Monday and in the financial district by Tuesday.
Motorists are being strongly urged to avoid the area, as Congress Street has been reduced to one lane and trucks and other equipment are affecting traffic.![]()
