BOSTON—A Lexington man is grateful that he wasn't more seriously injured when a 40-pound drive shaft crashed through the windshield of his car as he drove on Rt. 128 in Waltham.

David Johns received several cuts to the face from the metal object. He told WCVB-TV he was driving in the southbound lanes of the highway around noon Monday when he saw something fly up in the air.

Johns said the drive shaft smashed through his windshield, hit the dashboard and then struck his face before landing on his lap. He said he remained composed and was able to pull over to the breakdown lane and call for help.

State police say the object came off a lumber truck from a home center in Lunenberg. The truck has been impounded for a full inspection.
