Underground electrical fire in Harvard Square

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—A portion of Harvard Square remains closed to traffic following an underground electrical fire that sent smoke and flames shooting out of several manholes.

NStar spokeswoman Caroline Allen says the fire early Friday was caused by a cable failure. No one was injured.

About 700 NStar customers lost electricity, but Allen says nearly all were restored by the afternoon.

A spokesman for the Cambridge Fire Department says Harvard University's Holyoke Center, which includes a student health care facility, was evacuated as a precaution.

Subway service through Harvard Square was not effected, but some bus routes were diverted.

In a separate incident, Allen said an NStar contractor was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital after being injured in a flash fire in a manhole on Freeport Street in Boston. The worker's name and condition were not immediately known.
