Chemical spills after train derailment in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Mass.—A Lawrence neighborhood was evacuated after a freight car derailed and spilled a chemical along a stretch of train track.

The dry, granular white chemical, identified as sodium chlorate, is commonly used in the manufacture of paper pulp and as a herbicide. It is not considered dangerous unless it comes in contact with water.

An area school was opened for neighbors as a precaution. About a dozen area homes were evacuated.

Thursday's spill also interrupted commuter rail service. The MBTA bused passengers between the Andover and Lawrence stops.
