NATICK, Mass.—A 15-month battle in Natick over the "Redmen" nickname has ended with the school committee voting again not to use it for high school sports teams.

The committee decision last week came after residents voted 2-1 in March in favor of asking the committee to reconsider its decision.

In its unanimous vote, committee members cited American Indians who said the name offended them.

Mary Anne Hendricks, sachem of the Natick Nipmuc Indians, hailed the vote and said history had been made.

Redmen supporters, who include former Natick High and NFL quarterback Doug Flutie, say the name is about town pride and tradition. They say they'll begin collecting signatures for a ballot question in November to overturn the school committee's decision.
