GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.—A Monument Mountain Regional High School graduate who plans on studying film and journalism at Fitchburg State College is the winner of the 2008 Daniel Pearl Berkshire Scholarship.

Samantha deManbey was also on the staff of the school newspaper and was involved in the school's Shakespeare & Company festival and Equal Rights Alliance.

The scholarship is named for Pearl, the former chief of the Wall Street Journal's South Asia bureau who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in January 2002 while researching a story on Islamic extremists.

The $1,000 scholarship was established by the North Adams Transcript and The Berkshire Eagle, the two western Massachusetts newspapers where Pearl started his journalism career. It is awarded to a senior who plans to major in journalism or music.
