Algae close beaches

Public beaches on West Monponsett Pond in Halifax were closed last week because of the health department's concern over heavy algae blooms. According to Health Agent Cathleen Drinan, tests showed that several blooms belong to a species known to be toxic. Drinan noted the ongoing humid weather, coupled with the historically high levels of phosphorus in West Monponsett Pond, provide the perfect combination for an explosive algae bloom. Cool weather and heavy rain may help to dissipate the algae, but at this point, said Drinan, the beaches could remain closed for the remainder of the summer. Closed beaches include the boat ramp on Route 58, the Lingan Street Town Beach, and the Halifax Beach Association beach. Contaminated areas are easy to spot, Drinan said. The water's surface has the appearance of green paint, and the water itself resembles pea soup. The public should not go into the water in those areas, or allow pets in, she said. Contact can result in eye, ear, and skin irritation. More serious effects include muscle cramps and twitching. PLYMOUTH
RETHINKING CAR PERKS - Selectman Butch Machado believes the town can no longer afford to cover the commuting costs of several local officials, particularly with the current price of gas. "The people driving town cars are making $80,000 to $100,000 a year," Machado said. "They can pay for their own gas to commute." A fuel budget deficit had prompted Machado to speak out at a recent selectmen's meeting about employees who are allowed to take town cars home. Public safety officials, along with other town employees who have cars as part of their contracts, travel to and from work in those town-owned vehicles. "I'm in this for the working people, who are already facing an increase in water and sewer rates," Machado said. "I can't allow stuff like this to go on. If I did, I couldn't sleep at night." He urged his fellow selectmen to rethink their policy on town car use and take up the issue at a future meeting. - Christine Legere
