Algae close beaches
Public beaches on West Monponsett Pond in Halifax were closed last week because of the health department's concern over heavy algae blooms. According to Health Agent Cathleen Drinan, tests showed that several blooms belong to a species known to be toxic. Drinan noted the ongoing humid weather, coupled with the historically high levels of phosphorus in West Monponsett Pond, provide the perfect combination for an explosive algae bloom. Cool weather and heavy rain may help to dissipate the algae, but at this point, said Drinan, the beaches could remain closed for the remainder of the summer. Closed beaches include the boat ramp on Route 58, the Lingan Street Town Beach, and the Halifax Beach Association beach. Contaminated areas are easy to spot, Drinan said. The water's surface has the appearance of green paint, and the water itself resembles pea soup. The public should not go into the water in those areas, or allow pets in, she said. Contact can result in eye, ear, and skin irritation. More serious effects include muscle cramps and twitching.
