BOSTON—A plastic surgeon fired by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center after he appeared to fall asleep while performing a liposuction has had his license to practice medicine suspended by the state.

The state Board of Registration in Medicine on Thursday announced it had suspended the license of Dr. Loren Borud.

The 44-year-old Borud has struggled with substance abuse for six years, according to the board.

The board says Borud closed his eyes during an operation on June 27 and had to be roused by a resident. He was ordered to take a drug test. The board says he told a resident he had had "several" alcoholic drinks and asked that resident to provide him with a clean urine sample. The resident refused.

Borud never took a drug test and was fired on July 18.
