BARNSTABLE, Mass.—The new chief executive of Cape Cod Healthcare Inc. took a major step in getting the system on firmer financial footing by announcing 169 jobs cuts.
Dr. Richard Salluzzo, who took over in July, announced on Monday that the staff reductions, along with improved billing procedures, the elimination of consulting fees and other expense reductions are expected to save $31 million.
The system, which runs Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital, is $25 million short in its operating budget, while net income is $15 million in the red.
Most of the job cuts are in management and support staff, but some nursing positions are also being cut. The system has about 4,500 workers.
A union representative called the cuts "significant."
