SANDWICH, Mass.—A Cape Cod supermarket has removed vanilla extracts and its imitation equivalents from store shelves because people have apparently been drinking it for its high alcohol content.

A spokesman for Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. says workers at the chain's Sandwich store have been finding empty bottles of the baking ingredient stashed around the store.

Spokesman Rob Keane says the extract is being stored behind a counter and is available to customers on request.

Police say people drink the extract because the bottles are small, its affordable price, high alcohol content and ease of access.

The 35-percent alcohol content of most vanilla extracts approaches some hard liquors.

Keane says there have been no problems at the chain's other Cape Cod locations.
