Man arraigned in case tied to fatal brawl
A 20-year-old man was arraigned yesterday on charges connected to a deadly weekend brawl at a sub shop. Roberto Garcia of Lowell is accused of pulling a gun and threatening another person during the fight at Santoro's early Sunday morning. He pleaded not guilty yesterday to a charge of armed assault with intent to murder. Bail was set at $50,000. He was also being held on a probation violation. The Middlesex District Attorney's office says that 38-year-old Jimmy Foresti of Lowell died from injuries consistent with an apparent beating. Garcia is not charged with the death of Foresti, and his attorney said he denies any involvement in the killing. Authorities are continuing to investigate the stabbing. (AP)

SPRINGFIELD
Firefighter charged with rape of teenager
A Springfield firefighter pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges that he handcuffed a 14-year-old boy who was visiting his home and repeatedly raped him, then attacked the relative of the boy with a knife when he was confronted about the assault. Eddie Rivera, 33, was ordered held on a $250,000 cash bail on nine charges, including three counts of rape of a child with force; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; and two counts of furnishing liquor to a minor. Police Captain Robert T. McFarlin said officers were investigating additional charges against Rivera after another underage boy came forward saying the firefighter had sexually assaulted him last month. Rivera was arrested Sunday after he called police to his home, where angry relatives of the boy he is accused of attacking were banging on the house and breaking windows. (AP)

Students flock to club for the Bard, pie
Some students join for pie. Others show up for the Bard. Whatever their reasons are for joining the new Shakespeare and Pie club at Hampshire College, first-year student and club founder Josh Parr is pretty happy with the response. Parr started reading Shakespeare in high school, and the idea to pair Shakespearean discussion and snacks came to him shortly after he arrived on campus. The addition of pie, he said, was something he hoped would boost the club's popularity. At the first meeting, ingredients needed for baking apple, chocolate, and pumpkin pies filled the center island of the Merrill House kitchen, and, as it is a literary club, each had to be named.
