Arlington depot mural wins award

The Arlington Cultural Council announced last week that the student-painted mural at the Arlington Heights bus depot has been awarded the 2009 Gold Star Award by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
The award honors large projects funded by local cultural councils across Massachusetts that "celebrate diversity, foster collaboration, showcase artistic excellence, and provide learning experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds," according to the Arlington council's website, arlingtonculturalcouncil.wordpress.com.
The mural was designed and painted last fall by a group of students from Dearborn Academy, under the tutelage of local artist Tova Speter.
The bright and colorful mural weaves together images in Arlington's history, including Old Schwamb Mill, Paul Revere's ride, and the Minuteman Bike Path.
The award will be presented at a reception honoring 2009 grant recipients on April 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
