Firefighters in Chelsea battled a "gritty" blaze with "thick, acrid" smoke Friday night when a dumpster caught fire inside a roofing supply warehouse, burning trash and construction materials under the canopy of an enclosed building, fire officials said.

The call came in around 8:30 p.m. and the blaze quickly grew inside the building, becoming an "all hands" fire, requiring all five Chelsea fire trucks and a ladder company from Everett, according to Chelsea Fire Department Deputy Chief Robert Zalewski.

The nature of the roofing materials inside the building created a pungent cloud of smoke in the area, Zalewski said. There were also some propane tanks in the building that forced firefighters to be extra careful, according to the chief. Zalewski estimated the damage at $10,000. No injuries were reported.
