Health officials are monitoring three Shrewsbury students and one chaperone as a precaution after one student showed signs of the H1N1 virus while on a school trip. Officials from Saint John’s High School in Shrewsbury were notified Wednesday that the individuals on the trip to China were being quarantined. The remaining 12 students and chaperone have continued with their trip as planned, said a statement from school officials at Saint John’s. The group left for the school-sponsored trip on June 11.BOSTON
‘Rockefeller’ files notice of intent to appeal
The man who calls himself Clark Rockefeller has filed a notice in court saying he intends to appeal his conviction on kidnapping and assault charges. Rockefeller, a German national whose real name is Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, was convicted last week in the kidnapping of his 7-year-old daughter, Reigh Boss, during a supervised visit in Boston last July. The notice of appeal filed in Suffolk Superior Court on Tuesday does not list any grounds for challenging his conviction. A more detailed appeal will be filed later. His defense lawyers argued that he was delusional and legally insane when he snatched his daughter and fled to Baltimore. Prosecutors said he planned the kidnapping for months after his wife divorced him and won full custody of the girl. (AP)
Court denies appeal of ‘Strangler’ friend
The state’s highest court has rejected another appeal by the onetime jailhouse confidant of the reputed Boston Strangler. Last year, the Supreme Judicial Court denied an appeal from George Nassar in a 1967 conviction for killing an Andover gas station attendant. Yesterday, the court denied his latest appeal. Nassar was implicated by various people as the real Boston Strangler, who killed 13 women between 1962 and early 1964. He has repeatedly denied any involvement. While in jail in the 1960s, Nassar befriended Albert DeSalvo, who had been convicted of sexual assault charges. Nassar told his attorney, F. Lee Bailey, that DeSalvo, another client of Bailey’s, was the Boston Strangler. DeSalvo confessed to Bailey, but later recanted and was killed in prison in 1973. Two Massachusetts elementary school teachers have been given state awards. Jae Goodwin, a fifth-grade teacher in Framingham, was named the state’s 2009-10 Teacher of the Year yesterday. Jennifer Leith, a fourth-grade teacher in Holden, was named the state’s Preserve America History Teacher of the Year. Education Commissioner Mitchell D. Chester said both teachers “exemplify the excellence, passion, and drive’’ needed for student success. Goodwin uses technology to enhance her teaching. Leith uses role playing, literature, and diaries to learn about immigrants at Ellis Island. (AP) City signs off on BC expansion
Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the zoning commission formally approved Boston College’s $1 billion expansion plan June 10, with an amendment requiring that an undergraduate residence hall be the first project undertaken, city and school officials said yesterday. The approved institutional master plan, which includes new residence halls for nearly 800 students and a baseball stadium, excludes the proposed 150-student dormitory on the former property of the Archdiocese of Boston in Brighton, said BC spokesman Jack Dunn.QUINCY
Alleged fare evader faces assault charge
A Quincy man was arrested, accused of fare evasion and assault and battery on transit police officers during a struggle at the Quincy Center station yesterday. MBTA Transit police said officers spotted Robert C. Fitzgerald, 54, about 11:15 a.m. as he “piggybacked’’ behind a paying customer, going through the fare gate without paying. Confronted by two plainclothes officers, Fitzgerald first apologized and then gave a false name, said Transit police Sergeant Michael Flanagan. Flanagan said Fitzgerald then fled, but “officers arrested him on stairs leading out of the station after a struggle.’’ Officers learned there were several warrants out for Fitzgerald’s arrest, including cases of weapons and drug charges.© Copyright 2009 Globe Newspaper Company.
