A Level 3 sex offender was arrested and charged with open and gross lewdness yesterday, accused of exposing himself as he followed a woman onto a Red Line MBTA train. Police said Jerome E. Reed, 49, of Mattapan, closely followed the woman from the Mattapan trolley onto a train at the Ashmont station. The train was held at the station until police arrived, identified him, and placed him under arrest at 9:35 a.m., said MBTA Transit Police Sergeant Preston Horton. Horton said that if the incident went unreported it could have escalated to a physical assault. Reed was held yesterday on $200 bail at Transit Police headquarters. Tufts aims to reproduce Newton’s apple
Legend has it that Sir Isaac Newton devised his theory of gravitation after watching a falling apple. Now, professors and staff at Tufts University are working to grow an apple tree that traces back to Newton’s English farm. The tree will be part of the upcoming 20th anniversary of the Tufts Institute of Cosmology. Earlier this spring, Tufts grounds manager John Vik took three branches from an apple tree at MIT that traces its lineage to the farm where Newton lived in the 1600s. Biology professor George Ellmore then took the cuttings to an orchard in Harvard. If the cuttings grow, the tree could be planted this fall at Tufts. (AP)LOS ANGELES
