A 48-year-old Quincy man was seriously injured when he was run over by a van yesterday morning in Dorchester while attempting to jump-start his vehicle.
The victim was in the backyard of a friend’s house on Sydney Street, where the two men were attempting to jump-start one car with a van.
The victim, whose name was not released, was standing in front of the van, holding jumper cables.
Police said his friend apparently did not realize the van was in gear and hit the victim, smashing through a wooden fence and pushing the victim more than 20 feet into an adjacent backyard. They said the driver backed up in an effort to free the victim, but ran over him, causing serious head injuries.
“It appears the two people involved were friends and that this was probably an accident,’’ said Boston Police Department spokesman Joe Zanoli.
The city’s homicide unit is investigating, which police said is standard procedure in cases of serious injury.
The victim is being treated at Boston Medical Center.
“I heard a loud bang and my mom came in and yelled and said there was an accident,’’ said Wojetk Kimborowicz, 25, of Dorchester, who lives at the property where the victim landed after being struck.
“I have never seen anything like this happen before around here,’’ Kimborowicz said, as he stood in his yard, which was still strewn with debris, including the victim’s shoe.![]()
