Lawrence reeling after fire layoffs
Officials in this cash-strapped city have tried to stay within the shrinking confines of their budget this year, but their efforts broke down yesterday when the fire department laid off 10 people and closed two of its six firehouses, leaving the department with barely enough firefighters to cover the city, said Deputy Chief Jack Bergeron.
