Man charged with stabbing in Dorchester
A man was arrested after a 25-year-old man was stabbed early yesterday morning in Dorchester, leaving a trail of blood down Davidson Avenue. Jerome Higgins, 30, of Dorchester, was arrested after officers investigated a report of a stabbing in the area of nearby Inwood Street at around 1:35 a.m. Police found the victim on Davidson Avenue at the end of the dead-end street. Officers followed the trail of blood two blocks to Inwood Street, where the victim and Higgins had allegedly gotten into a fight and the victim had been stabbed, said police spokesman Eddy Chrispin. The victim was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, according to a police statement. The suspect was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (knife).

MANSFIELD
Two women injured in two-car collision
A 57-year-old Holliston woman was transported by helicopter from Interstate 95 near Mansfield yesterday after her sedan and a minivan collided, causing all three lanes to be shut down on the highway and resulting in a serious backup of Labor Day weekend traffic. State Police were investigating the cause of the collision between the woman’s 2007 Honda Civic and a 2002 Honda Odyssey at 11:15 a.m. The woman’s car overturned and rolled off the highway, stopping after it hit a tree. She was transported to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the Odyssey, a 28-year-old Westborough man, was not injured, but his 61-year-old female passenger, also from Westborough, was transported to Boston Medical Center with minor injuries.

WEBSTER
Teen dies after car crashes into woods
An 18-year-old male died Friday after his 1998 Buick Skylark overturned and landed in on its roof in the woods on Sutton Road. Chad Holbrooke of Oxbridge was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Webster police. His 16-year-old female passenger from Northbridge was transported to UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester with serious injuries. The accident occurred at about 5:45 p.m. Webster police Sergeant Michael Shaw said no drugs or alcohol were involved, but it appeared that neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing seatbelts and speeding may have been a factor. Holbrooke had just graduated from Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School.

SPRINGFIELD
Parishioners plan vigil to protest closure
Parishioners at a Roman Catholic church selected for closure by the diocese say they will not go without a fight. A group of parishioners at Immaculate Conception Church planned a candlelight vigil at the church grounds yesterday from 8:30 p.m. until midnight. Group chairwoman Caroline Bobala says they are also planning a rally today at St. Michael’s Cathedral beginning at 9 a.m. The 105-year-old parish is one of 14 churches selected by the Diocese of Springfield to close or merge within the next few months to deal with changing demographics and declining revenues. Bobala told The Republican of Springfield that Immaculate Conception has 3,200 members and no debt. (AP)

NASHUA
Officials investigating suspicious fire
Nashua officials are investigating a fire that ripped through a vacant building that once housed the Mohawk Tannery. The blaze broke out just after 4:30 a.m. yesterday and left a portion of the building, which is part of a federal Superfund site, structurally unsound. Several other fires, including one in October 2007, have broken out in the former Granite State Leathers site, which includes about 30 acres along the Nashua River. Fire officials said they had determined the cause of the fire to be “incendiary,’’ but did not say what led them to that conclusion. No one was injured in the blaze.

GROTON, CONN.
Animal shelter worker accused of cruelty
Police in Groton say they have charged a part-time Humane Society employee with cruelty to animals after finding her living in a trailer with nearly 50 cats. Police say Rebel Foular, 51, of Groton, faces six charges after she was arrested Friday. The animals were taken from her home last month. Police were called about a month ago by someone reporting an odor coming from Foular’s trailer. Police found 47 cats living in the 672-square-foot trailer. A spokeswoman for the Waterford Shelter and Companion Animal Sanctuary says Foular worked for the animal shelter. Officials described the animals as friendly and docile, but say the living conditions were filthy. (AP)
