A fight outside a bar near Faneuil Hall turned bloody early yesterday when a man stabbed his former co-worker in the chest with a steak knife, police said. The victim, an unidentified man about 21 years old from East Boston, was in stable condition at Massachusetts General Hospital, police said. A suspect has been identified, but has not been arrested. The suspect had previously worked as a cook at the Blackstone Grill, where the victim worked.
Deliberating jurors put question to judge
Jurors in the first-degree murder trial of two South End men sent a question to Suffolk Superior Court Judge Linda Giles yesterday in their second full day of deliberations. The jurors’ question to Giles asked what they should do if two jurors have reached opposite decisions on one defendant, indicating a 10-2 split. They remain in deliberations on the other defendant. Giles instructed the jurors to return Monday morning and continue deliberations. Antwan Carter, 20, and Daniel Pinckney Jr., 21, are charged with murder in the slaying of Cedirick Steele, 18, in 2007 as he stood near a bus stop, waiting to go on an errand with his mother. State health officials have raised the alert level for mosquitoes from moderate to high in three Southeastern Massachusetts communities after discovering more mosquitoes infected with two viruses dangerous to humans. New Bedford, Acushnet, and Freetown are under the heightened alert announced yesterday by the Department of Public Health. Mosquitoes found this week in New Bedford and Raynham have tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis, and mosquitoes in Westport tested positive for West Nile virus.CAMBRIDGE
Housing Authority gets 2d $10m grant
The Cambridge Housing Authority has received $10 million in federal stimulus money for the modernization and greening of the Lyndon B. Johnson Apartments, a 12-story, 180-unit development for the elderly and disabled in Cambridgeport, near Central Square. The US Housing and Urban Development grant, which is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is the second $10 million awarded to the authority in the last two weeks, authority officials said. Authority officials said the new funding will go toward a $21.8 million renovation project at the 36-year-old apartments.Fire department receives national honor
Fire Chief Gerald Reardon accepted a national honor this week on behalf of the department, recognized for its support of employee serving in the National Guard and Reserves. The department was one of 15 public and private employers to receive the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award at a White House ceremony with President Obama. Rescuers free homeowner pinned by rock
Police rescued a man trapped in his own front yard in Milford yesterday afternoon, police said. Police officer Mike Mastroianni rolled a 200- to 250-pound boulder off the unidentified man’s feet at about 4 p.m., freeing him after a yard work mishap. The man had some swelling and redness on his feet but did not go to the hospital.MELROSE
Man, 35, is held in stabbing of his father
Police said a man was stabbed in his home yesterday afternoon. The man called 911 shortly after 1 p.m., according to neighbors and police, to say that he had been stabbed. Police arrested Matthew V. Tringale, 35, who also lives at the residence, outside the house. He was charged with attempted murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery. Rescue workers treated the victim at the scene for stab wounds and transferred him to a hospital.
