The two candidates for mayor of Boston, incumbent Thomas M. Menino and challenger Michael F. Flaherty Jr., are scheduled tonight to face off in the first of two scheduled debates before the final election Nov. 3. Tonight’s hourlong debate will air live at 7 p.m. on WCVB-TV (Channel 5).

The debate will be moderated by one of the station’s anchors, Ed Harding, and its State House reporter, Janet Wu. The candidates will also field taped questions from voters.

Menino, who has been mayor since 1993, and Flaherty, a member of the Boston City Council, will also debate at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum. That debate is sponsored by the Globe, New England Cable News, WGBH-TV (Channel 2), and WBUR (90.9 FM).
