An MIT graduate student died Saturday after collapsing during the Baltimore Marathon, college officials said.

Peter Curtin, 23, was transported to Union Memorial Hospital about 11:20 a.m., according to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology press office, and was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m. The cause of death has not yet been released.

Curtin was a second-year inorganic chemistry student. He was recently selected to receive a National Defense Science and Engineering graduate fellowship.

“Peter was a gifted member of the MIT community, and our thoughts are now with his family,’’ said Marc Kastner, dean of the School of Science.

Lee Corrigan, president of Corrigan Sports Enterprises who organized the marathon, said Curtin collapsed around mile 25. “Our hearts go out to him, his family, and friends.’’

Curtin graduated from Princeton University in 2008. A memorial service will be held at the Princeton University Chapel on Oct. 25.

Curtin’s family has established a memorial fund to support undergraduates in the Princeton chemistry department. Donations can be sent to Helen Hardy, Princeton University, Alumni and Donor Relations, PO Box 5357, Princeton, N.J. 08543.
