Four people were killed in a head-on collision on a heavily traveled New Hampshire road yesterday morning, the deadliest in a string of fatal Columbus Day weekend accidents in New England that left seven people dead.

A Toyota Highlander carrying a Wellesley family collided with a Chevrolet Malibu carrying one person on Route 202 in Peterborough, N.H., near the Jaffrey town line, Peterborough Police Chief Scott Guinard said. Stephen Krause, 56, of Keene, N.H., was driving south when the northbound Highlander, driven by Stephen Lagakos, 63, crossed the center line as it was coming around a curve and collided with his car, Guinard said. Regina Lagakos, 61, and Helen W. Lagakos, 94, were passengers in the Highlander.

All four were pinned under their vehicles and were pronounced dead at the scene, Guinard said.

Police had not yet determined whether any of the victims were wearing seat belts.

Another person was killed in New Hampshire yesterday after a tractor-trailer carrying vehicles collided with a car on I-93 south in Hooksett, New Hampshire State Police said. Heavy traffic was diverted onto Interstate 293 south after the crash.

On Sunday, a Fall River man was killed after he lost control of his motorcycle in Dartmouth, State Police said. Scott Copp, 27, lost control of his Yamaha motorcycle while entering Route 79 south and crashed into the median guardrail.

A Vermont man was killed Sunday in a crash, Vermont State Police said. Joseph Bourgeois, 47, of Pittsford, was traveling east on Route 7 in Pittsford when his car veered off the road and rolled down an embankment.
