Three shot outside house in Hyannis
One man suffers multiple wounds, listed as critical
A 23-year-old Barnstable man, a victim in a triple shooting shortly after midnight at a house in Hyannis, was in critical condition yesterday in a Boston hospital. He had been shot several times in the abdomen, legs, and shoulder in Hyannis’s second triple shooting in seven weeks.
The victim was transported to Boston Medical Center, where he was undergoing surgery yesterday afternoon, according to Detective Sergeant John Murphy of the Barnstable Police.
A second victim, a 21-year-old man, was shot in the left leg, said Murphy, and an 18-year-old victim was shot in the foot. No names were being released, he said, and none of the victims are suspects.
A small quantity of narcotics - cocaine and prescription pills - was found at the scene on Nautical Way, as well as several spent shell casings, said Murphy.
“We believe that the victims and the suspects knew each other,’’ said Murphy. All three victims are “very well known’’ to local police.
In the early morning of Sept. 5, two men and a woman were shot and injured after a man opened fire in the parking lot of Pufferbellies, a Hyannis nightclub.
Barnstable police said the “fact pattern’’ in yesterday’s shooting is similar to the nightclub incident, but it is not known if the two events are related, according to a press release from the Police Department.
“The only thing we do know is the MO of the crime is extremely similar - multiple rounds fired in close proximity into crowds,’’ said Murphy.
Those involved in the Pufferbellies incident and last night’s incident know one another, he said, but he did not know if retaliation was involved. Murphy said he does not believe the crimes are gang-related.
The victims in the nightclub shooting all survived, Murphy said. There have been no arrests and police have no suspects, but they have identified “people of interest,’’ he said. The intended target was identified but is not cooperating, he said.
Although yesterday’s shooting was outside a residence, the people living there were not involved, he said. The street is a cul-de-sac and “young people hang out there after the bars close,’’ said Murphy.
Police received several 911 calls reporting gunshots around 12:30 a.m. When police arrived, two of the victims, including the one seriously injured, were found outside the duplex at 76 Nautical Way.
Police then pulled over a sport utility vehicle that was reported to have fled the scene right after the shooting. Four men were in the vehicle, including the 21-year-old victim. No one in that vehicle is a suspect, said Murphy.
“Hyannis is no different than any other community experiencing a rise in violence committed by young people,’’ said Murphy. “Communities throughout the Commonwealth are wrestling with young people committing violent acts.’’![]()
