BOSTON—A group of Latino journalists in Massachusetts has launched a new Spanish-language weekly newspaper.

El Tiempo de Boston, or The Boston Times, began publishing the free paper last week and enters a crowded Spanish-language market where newspapers in genernal are experiencing a drop in circulation and advertising.

Maximo Torres, director of the 20,000-circulation paper, said he wanted to give the area's growing Latino population another option among the eight or so papers already publishing.

Alberto Vasallo (vah-SAH'-yoh), publisher of the Boston-based El Mundo, said his paper has seen a 15 percent drop in advertising since last year.

U.S. Census estimates show that New England is home to close to 1 million Latinos, including about 560,000 in Massachusetts.
