BOSTON, Mass.—One of the officers hailed as a hero in the Fort Hood shootings has ties to Massachusetts.

Sgt. Kimberly Munley, credited with helping to end the Texas rampage by shooting the alleged gunman, worked for about a year during 2004 as a waitress at Dunn-Gaherin's, an Irish pub in Newton Upper Falls.

Seana Gaherin, one of the owners of the restaurant and bar, tells The Boston Globe that many staff and regulars have recognized Munley's photo from news reports and called the pub asking if it's the same woman they knew as Kimberly Barbour, Munley's maiden name. Gaherin says everyone is very proud of Munley, who often spoke about wanting a career in law enforcement.

Munley underwent a second surgery on Saturday and is listed in good condition.
