A Dorchester man was arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 24-year-old man yesterday in front of a convenience store near a strip of bars in Brighton, Boston police said.

An officer patrolling near Brighton and Harvard avenues - a hot spot with college students on weekends - found the unidentified victim about 2:16 a.m. in front of the store at 157 Brighton Ave., according to police.

The officer called for help and began to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the unconscious man.

The victim was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he died, police said.

Boston police arrested Corey Patterson, 23, minutes after the stabbing on charges of accessory after a murder and several counts of assault and battery, among other charges, a police spokesman said.

Police are continuing to investigate and ask anyone with information to contact the homicide unit.

A 23-year-old man who witnessed the stabbing and requested anonymity because he feared retribution, said a large crowd had gathered around a fight among three or four men.

“All of Allston saw the fight,’’ he said, noting that the area was bustling with people flowing out of bars.

When one of the men pulled a knife, the victim repeatedly told him to put it down, according to the witness.

After he was stabbed, the victim fell to the ground, the witness said.

The death marks the 43d homicide this year in Boston, compared with 53 at the same time last year, police said.

Some Allston and Brighton residents said bar brawls are common in the neighborhood, but many were shocked to learn of the death.

“That’s something I will not tell my mother,’’ said Ryan DellaCagna, a 19-year-old sophomore at Boston University who lives a few minutes away from the scene of the stabbing.

“I’ve walked past that exact spot every day a couple times a day.’’

Mike McGreens, a 32-year-old doorman at a bar, sat perched atop a mailbox across the street.

“It’s a shame,’’ said McGreens, holding a coffee cup with his fingers, which were tattooed with the words “HARD LUCK.’’

“People go to the bar to have a good time. You shouldn’t have to worry about getting stabbed.’’
