Mass. gov. candidate turns down running mate offer

BOSTON—State Treasurer Timothy Cahill, running for governor of Massachusetts as an independent, said he has turned down offers from supporters of Republican candidate Charles Baker to be his running mate.

Cahill tells The Boston Globe the proposal was made Friday in a phone call from Joseph Nolan, an NStar executive active in Baker's campaign, to Cahill's chief of staff. Cahill said that call came a few weeks after another Baker supporter, Mark Robinson, made a more general inquiry to another Cahill aide.

Cahill says the proposal was an attempt to get him out of the race.

Rob Gray, a Baker spokesman, said no one from the campaign made a formal offer to Cahill.

Cahill split from the Democrats and is running as a fiscal conservative.
