BOSTON—The family of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy is applauding Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley on her primary win.

Coakley defeated three Democratic challenges for the chance to take on Republican state Sen. Scott Brown in the race to fill Kennedy's Senate seat.

In a statement, the family said they have "every confidence" Coakley will be victorious in January's general election.

Kennedy's widow Vicki Kennedy and the late senator's sons opted not to endorse during the three month primary.

In the statement, the family called each of the Democratic candidates -- including Rep. Michael Capuano (cap-yoo-AH'-noh), Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca (pah-lee-OOH'-kah) and City Year co-founder Alan Khazei (KAY'-zee) -- a friend of Senator Kennedy.

Kennedy died Aug. 25 of a brain tumor.
