CONCORD, N.H.—A couple is suing New Hampshire jail officials over the 2008 death of their inmate son.

Court records show that Richard and Shelagh McEvoy of Chelmsford, Mass., filed a $25 million federal lawsuit last week against Hillsborough County jail officials.

The Lowell Sun says the McEvoys allege that Hillsborough County Superintendent James O'Mara Jr. and others didn't provide 24-year-old Kevin McEvoy adequate medical care after his August 2008 arrest on shoplifting related charges, even though he was known to be going through heroin withdrawal.

An autopsy determined Kevin McEvoy died of dehydration and kidney failure.

Hillsborough County officials have not responded to the lawsuit.
